Personal statement

"I want to use my full potential for the world around me."

My parents came to this country from Korea. My father became a physician, my mother a pharmacist. And when they were not working, they went to Africa and South America for humanitarian work.

I grew up watching that. So did my sisters, who were doing NGO work before most kids their age had decided on a hobby.

I picked up a viola at nine. It has taken me through hospital corridors, a benefit concert, a coat drive, a flight to Germany in 2024 where I performed as a guest musician at a peace concert for North Korea. This is just the beginning.

Nonprofit Spotlight

Founder & Director · NJ Registered Nonprofit
Music Teacher for Nicaragua
In the summer of 2024, my older sister traveled to Tipitapa, Nicaragua, on a medical mission trip. Tipitapa is widely considered one of the poorest communities in Central America, where public schools exist but remain out of reach for many families. Part of her work took her to a school founded and run by missionaries from Korea.

When she came home, one thing she told me stayed with me. Inside the school were musical instruments donated by visiting volunteers over the years: guitars, violins, violas, cellos, clarinets, and keyboards. But the school had no music classes and no music teacher. The students had instruments right in front of them, and no one to teach them how to play.

As a musician at Juilliard Pre-College, I knew exactly what those students needed and what I could do to help. Without a teacher, those instruments would just keep sitting there. That's when I decided I was going to find those students a music teacher.

For just $6,500 a year, less than $18 a day, 150 students in Tipitapa can have a music teacher in their school. Music changed my life. I want that for them too.

They already have the instruments. Help us give them a teacher.

Because of you, we can look further than Nicaragua. In the 2027–2028 school year we're expanding to Liberia in West Africa, where $4,500 a year, less than $13 a day, gives another school its own music teacher.
